All About the Country Music Awards
The Country Music Association Awards (CMAs) is an award organization that recognizes country music artists along with country music broadcasters for their achievements. The award show is televised each year in the fall.
History of the CMAs
The first CMA award dates back to 1967. The award was presented to Eddy Arnold for Entertainer of the Year. It was not televised; however, the second award ceremony in 1968 was recorded and televised at a later date. From 1969 to the present, the award show is televised and broadcast live from Nashville, with the exception of 2005 where the awards were held in New York City.
Eligibility for Awards
To be eligible for a CMA award, albums and songs must be released between July 1 of the previous year and June 30 of the current year. For example, if a song was released on July 5, 2018, the song would be eligible for the 2019 awards; however, anything prior to July 1, 2018 would not be eligible for 2019 awards. Awards are decided upon by over 7,300 people from the CMA group who vote for nominees and winners. The nominees are then voted on for three rounds until the winners are decided.
Annual Music Award Categories
Music award categories include Music Video of the Year, Album of the Year, Song of the Year, Vocal Duo of the Year, Single of the Year, Musical Event of the Year, Vocal Group of the Year, New Artist of the Year, Male Vocalist of the Year, Female Vocalist of the Year and Entertainer of the Year. The show usually saves Female Vocalist , Male Vocalist and Entertainer of the Year awards for the last three as they're the most coveted. Entertainer of the Year is the last award handed out and is a culmination of record sales, ticket sales and overall entertainment value of the artist. Past winners include Glen Campbell, Johnny Cash, Dolly Parton, Reba McEntire, Garth Brooks, George Strait and Kenny Chesney.
Annual Broadcaster Awards
The Country Music Association understands that artists would not be as popular as they are without the help of thousands of broadcasters throughout the United States. Broadcasters are recognized for the achievements in the industry as well. Broadcaster awards include Station of the Year and Personality of the Year. These awards are broken down into four categories depending on the market size to make for eight awards. The ninth award given is National Personality of the year.
CMA Award Hosts
An award show is only as good as its hosts, and the CMAs have had a range of hosts. The very first award ceremony was hosted by Sonny James and Bobbie Gentry. The longest running host was Vince Gill, who held the job title for over 20 years from 1992 to 2003. He co-hosted with Clint Black in 1993 and Reba McEntire in 1992. As of 2019, Carrie Underwood and Brad Paisley have been hosting the show together since 2008.
